About Plant Fabrication

Plant fabrication is the structural and mechanical steelwork that turns delivered equipment into a working installation — the platforms an operator stands on, the supports a vessel sits on, the hoppers and chutes that move material, the tanks that hold it, and the access that makes all of it maintainable. It is fabricated to the drawings a specific site needs rather than bought from a catalogue, because no two boiler houses have the same layout.

Most of this scope is decided by loads and access rather than by the equipment itself. A platform has to carry the people and tools that will stand on it, a support has to carry a vessel full rather than empty, and a chute has to be reachable when the material it carries inevitably bridges. Getting those right is unglamorous and is the difference between a plant that can be maintained on a shift and one where every routine job needs scaffolding.

We fabricate at our works and erect on site, working to approved drawings with material certification where the application calls for it. The scope covers structural steel, platforms, staircases and ladders, equipment supports and skids, storage tanks and hoppers, chutes and transitions, and the guarding that makes the installation safe to work around.

Plant Fabrication Key Features

  • Structural steel, platforms, staircases, ladders and walkways
  • Equipment supports, skids and base frames
  • Storage tanks, hoppers, bunkers and chutes
  • Guarding, handrails and toe boards for safe access
  • Shop fabrication with site erection
  • Fabricated to approved drawings for the specific layout
  • Material certification where the application requires it

Scope of Work

Design & Detailing

Layout and detail drawings developed against the equipment arrangement, imposed loads and the access the plant will actually need in service.

Shop Fabrication

Cutting, forming, welding and surface preparation carried out at our works, where quality is easier to control than on site.

Site Erection

Assembly, alignment and fixing on site, sequenced around the equipment it supports and the space available.

Surface Protection

Preparation and painting appropriate to the environment, which for a boiler house means heat, dust and occasional washdown.

Advantages of a Plant Fabrication

Built for the Layout You Have

Fabricated to site drawings rather than adapted from a standard product, which matters most in retrofits where the new equipment has to fit around what is already there.

Access Designed In

Platforms, ladders and clearances are set by what maintenance actually requires, so routine work does not need scaffolding every time.

Shop Quality, Site Fit

As much as possible is welded and finished at the works, where conditions are controlled, leaving assembly rather than fabrication for site.

Single Interface With the Equipment Scope

When the same party supplies the boiler and the steel that carries it, the supports match the nozzle positions the first time.

Optional Accessories

Handrails & Toe Boards
Grating & Chequered Plate
Ladders & Cages
Anchor Bolts & Base Plates
Access Doors & Covers

Frequently Asked Questions(3)

Do you fabricate to our drawings or produce your own?
Either. We work to drawings you supply, or develop the layout and detail drawings ourselves from the equipment arrangement and the site constraints, issued for your approval before fabrication starts. On retrofits the second route is usually faster, because the constraints only become clear once the existing plant is surveyed.
Is fabrication done at site or at your works?
As much as possible at our works. Shop conditions give better control over cutting, welding and surface preparation than a live plant does, and moving fabrication off site shortens the disruptive part of the programme. Site work is then assembly, alignment and fixing.
Can you work around an operating plant?
Yes, and it is common. Where the plant cannot stop, work is sequenced around available windows and shutdowns, with the scope broken into what can be prefabricated in advance and what genuinely has to happen in situ. Tell us the shutdown you have to work within and we will plan against it.
