What steam does a paper mill need?
Steam is the drying medium, so demand is dominated by the dryer section rather than by stock preparation. Load is continuous and large, which favours a boiler sized for steady base-load duty with condensate returned from the dryer cans — the recovery there is substantial and usually the first efficiency measure worth doing.
Can a paper mill burn its own waste as fuel?
Sometimes. Rejects and sludge have a usable calorific value once dewatered, but moisture and ash content vary far more than bought fuel, so the boiler must be designed for that variability rather than adapted to it afterwards.
