Balance of plant is everything a boiler needs in order to be a working boiler house rather than a delivered machine. It is the least glamorous line on a project and routinely the one that decides whether commissioning happens on schedule, because the boiler arrives finished and the rest has to be designed, fabricated and erected around it, on site, in the right order.

On the water side, treatment comes before anything else. Poor feed water is the single biggest cause of scaling, corrosion and carryover, and each of those is a slow, expensive failure of equipment that was fine when it arrived. A softener removes hardness, demineralisation and reverse osmosis go further where the pressure or the process demands it, and a deaerator strips dissolved oxygen before it reaches the drum. The right combination depends on your raw water analysis, not on a standard package.

On the gas side, the flue path has to carry hot, often abrasive gas from the furnace to the stack without wasting heat or destroying itself. That means ducting sized for the draught the ID fan can produce, refractory lining where temperatures would otherwise attack the steel, insulation on surfaces that would otherwise radiate purchased heat into the boiler house, and a chimney built to the height and construction the pollution control board requires.

Then there is the steam side and the structure holding all of it: IBR and non-IBR pipework with the material certification and inspection the regulations require, pressure vessels, boiler auxiliaries, dual fuel burners, economisers recovering heat from the flue gas, and the platforms, supports and bridge girders that carry the load.

We take this as one scope for a specific reason. Splitting responsibility between the boiler manufacturer, an erector and a piping contractor is where commissioning delays come from — each party's work is complete by its own definition and the gaps between them belong to nobody. Send us the boiler rating, your raw water analysis and the site layout, and we will quote the balance of plant as a single accountable package.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does balance of plant include for a boiler?
Everything in the boiler house except the boiler: feedwater treatment (softener, DM or RO) and the deaerator, IBR and non-IBR steam and feed piping, ducting and the ID fan, the chimney, refractory and insulation, economisers, pressure vessels, boiler auxiliaries and dual fuel burners, and the structural steel, platforms and bridge girders that carry it all. On most installations it is a substantial share of the delivered cost and the larger share of the site work.
What is mechanical BOP?
Mechanical balance of plant is the mechanical scope specifically — piping, ducting, fans, pumps, vessels, structures and erection — as distinct from the electrical and instrumentation balance of plant, which covers switchgear, cabling, control systems and field instruments. Projects are often tendered with the two split, and it is worth being explicit about which one a quotation covers, because the interfaces between them are exactly where scope gaps hide.
Can you quote balance of plant separately from the boiler?
Yes. BOP is scoped and quoted on its own, including for boilers supplied by someone else, and it is also frequently the scope on a retrofit or a capacity upgrade where the pressure part stays and everything around it changes. What we would ask for is the boiler rating and drawings, your raw water analysis, the fuel, and the site layout.
Do you carry out BOP fabrication across India?
Yes. Fabrication is done at our works and the erection is executed on site, for plants across India from our base in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. IBR pipework carries the material certification and stage inspection the regulations require, which is worth confirming explicitly with any BOP contractor before award rather than at the point of registration.
