Dissolved gases — especially oxygen — are a primary cause of pitting corrosion in boilers, feed lines, and economisers; effective deaeration is essential to protect the boiler and extend its life.

A pressurised or atmospheric deaerator heats feed water to near saturation using pegging steam and mechanically scrubs out dissolved gases, typically reducing oxygen to very low levels (often below 0.005–0.02 mg/l depending on type). The heated, deaerated water is stored in an integral tank that also provides feed water reserve for stable boiler operation.
