Biomass power and cogeneration plants convert agricultural and process residues into electricity, process steam, or both. For a plant already generating residue — bagasse, husk, shells, stalks, sawdust — the fuel is on site, its cost is disposal avoided rather than fuel purchased, and the carbon position is materially different from fossil generation.
Cogeneration is usually the stronger case. A plant that needs both process steam and electricity can extract steam at process pressure from the turbine rather than condensing it fully, which lifts overall fuel utilisation far above what separate generation and boiler plant would achieve. Where the process steam demand is steady, that changes the project economics decisively.
A plant of this kind is an integration exercise more than an equipment purchase. Fuel reception, storage and handling; the boiler and its grate or fluidised bed; turbine and generator; condensing and cooling; feed water treatment; ash handling; emission control; and the electrical interface to the grid or the plant bus all have to work as one system, and the interfaces between them are where projects fail.
