About Chimney Fabrication

A chimney does two jobs at once: it discharges flue gas high enough and fast enough to disperse properly, and it provides part of the draught the boiler needs to breathe. Height is not an aesthetic decision — it is set by the emission requirements in your consent to operate, and getting it wrong is a compliance problem rather than a performance one.

GyanTosh, based in Indore, fabricates and erects self-supporting and guyed steel chimneys for boilers, thermic fluid heaters, hot air generators and process furnaces. The structural design has to carry its own weight and the wind loading at that height, which is what drives plate thickness, base diameter and foundation loads. Where the gas is hot or carries acidic condensate, the shell is lined or specified in a grade that will survive it, because a chimney that corrodes from the inside gives no warning before it becomes unsafe.

The scope includes the parts that are easy to leave out of a quotation and difficult to add later: sampling ports positioned where the pollution board expects to take a reading, access for that sampling, aviation warning paint and lighting where the height requires it, lightning protection, rain caps, drains for condensate, and the expansion arrangement where the flue duct meets the shell.

How is chimney height decided?
By the dispersion requirement that applies to your installation, which the state pollution control board sets out in the consent to operate. It depends on the fuel, the emission and the surroundings rather than on the size of the boiler alone. Fabricating to a height chosen by rule of thumb and discovering it is short at inspection is an expensive way to find out, so the height should be confirmed against the consent before design.
Self-supporting or guyed — which do I need?
Self-supporting chimneys carry their own wind and dead load through the shell and foundation, need no surrounding space and are the usual answer where the plot allows the foundation. Guyed chimneys use a lighter shell braced by guy ropes, which costs less in steel but needs anchor points at a distance and clear ground around the base. Available space and foundation conditions usually decide it.
Does the chimney need lining?
It depends on how hot the gas is when it reaches the shell. Where gas cools below its acid dew point inside the chimney, condensate forms and attacks the steel from the inside — so lining or an appropriate material grade is specified. Downstream of a scrubber or a long uninsulated duct this is the normal case rather than the exception.
Can you replace an existing chimney?
Yes. Replacement is a common scope where an existing chimney has corroded, where a fuel change has altered the gas condition, or where a revised consent requires more height. The work usually has to be planned around a shutdown, so tell us the window you have.
