About Slop Fired Boiler

Gyantosh's Slop Fired Boilers give distilleries a proven route to Zero Liquid Discharge by incinerating concentrated spent wash (slop / vinasse) to generate steam and power. Instead of treating spent wash as a disposal problem, the boiler recovers its calorific value — solving the distillery's most difficult effluent challenge while producing useful energy. GyanTosh is a pioneer in slop-fired boiler technology with over two decades of experience.

Concentrated slop from the evaporation plant is fired through specialised slop guns (including German slop-gun technology) in combination with a support fuel such as bagasse, rice husk, or coal. Careful furnace design, corrosion- and slagging-resistant heat transfer surfaces, and precise combustion control handle the high potassium and organic content of spent wash, which is notoriously fouling and corrosive.

Every slop fired boiler is designed and manufactured in compliance with IBR 1950 and IS 2825 using certified boiler-quality pressure parts. Fully automatic operation regulates slop and support-fuel firing to maintain stable steam parameters despite variation in slop concentration.

Available in capacities from 20 to 100 TPH, working pressures up to 87 kg/cm², and steam temperatures up to 515°C, GyanTosh slop fired boilers enable distilleries to achieve Zero Effluent Liquid Discharge (ZELD) while meeting captive power and process steam needs.

Combustion Technology

Slop Gun Firing

Specialised slop guns (including German technology) atomise and fire concentrated spent wash into the furnace for stable, controlled incineration.

Support-Fuel Co-Firing

Bagasse, rice husk, or coal is co-fired to stabilise combustion and maintain furnace temperature as slop concentration varies.

Fouling-Resistant Furnace

Furnace geometry, soot blowing, and material selection manage the high-potassium, slagging, and corrosive nature of spent-wash combustion.

Automatic Firing Control

Slop and support-fuel rates are automatically regulated to hold steam pressure and temperature steady despite variation in slop quality.

Advantages of a Slop Fired Boiler

Zero Liquid Discharge Solution

Incinerating concentrated spent wash lets distilleries achieve Zero Effluent Liquid Discharge — solving their most difficult environmental compliance challenge.

Turns Effluent into Energy

The calorific value of spent wash is recovered as steam and power, converting a costly disposal liability into a useful energy asset.

Pioneer Experience

GyanTosh has pioneered slop-fired boiler technology over two decades, with the engineering know-how this demanding application requires.

Proven Slop-Gun Technology

German slop-gun technology ensures reliable atomisation and firing of concentrated slop for stable combustion.

Fuel Cost Avoidance

Using in-house spent wash and by-product bagasse dramatically reduces or eliminates purchased fuel cost for captive steam and power.

Compliance & Sustainability

Enables regulatory compliance with effluent norms while supporting a circular, sustainable distillery operation.

Frequently Asked Questions(9)

What is a slop fired boiler?
A slop fired boiler incinerates concentrated spent wash (slop / vinasse) from distilleries — co-fired with a support fuel such as bagasse, rice husk, or coal — to generate steam and power while eliminating liquid effluent.
How does it enable Zero Liquid Discharge?
By concentrating spent wash in an evaporation plant and then incinerating it in the boiler, the distillery destroys its liquid effluent entirely — achieving Zero Effluent Liquid Discharge (ZELD) while recovering the fuel value as energy.
Can slop be fired on its own?
Concentrated slop is normally co-fired with a support fuel (bagasse, rice husk, or coal) to stabilise combustion and maintain furnace temperature, since slop concentration and calorific value can vary.
What steam parameters are available?
GyanTosh slop fired boilers are offered from 20 to 100 TPH, with working pressures up to 87 kg/cm² and steam temperatures up to 515°C using German slop-gun technology.
How is fouling and corrosion managed?
Spent wash is high in potassium and organics, making it fouling and corrosive. Furnace geometry, soot blowing, and careful material selection are engineered specifically to manage slagging and protect heat transfer surfaces.
Is IBR certification provided?
Yes. Slop fired boilers are designed and manufactured in compliance with IBR 1950 and IS 2825, and supplied IBR approved.
Does GyanTosh have experience with slop firing?
Yes. GyanTosh is a pioneer in slop-fired boiler technology with over two decades of experience in this demanding distillery application.
Can GyanTosh provide the complete system?
Yes. GyanTosh provides turnkey solutions including the boiler, slop and support-fuel firing systems, heat recovery, APC equipment, water treatment, controls, installation, commissioning, and IBR inspection under single-point accountability.
What is the slop fired boiler working principle?
The slop fired boiler working principle is concentration then combustion. Distillery spent wash is concentrated to a syrup with a usable calorific value, then fired — usually with a supporting fuel — in a furnace built for its very high potassium and chloride content. The engineering challenge is not the burning, it is designing the heat transfer surfaces and soot blowing around ash that fouls and corrodes aggressively.
